Different Types Of Vacuum Cleaners For Pet Hair

Before you consider the make and model of vacuum cleaner that you want to buy, be aware of the different types of vacuum cleaner that are available.

This will have an influence on the vacuum cleaner that you need, as some types will be more suitable to certain homes than others. Not all vacuum cleaners are equal. There are variations in style and design which may make a cleaner more suitable for you. Not to mention the more obvious differences in price and specification.

So, what types of hoover do we need to think about?

Bagless vs Bagged Vacuum Cleaners

Regardless of the type of design, many of the newer models will be described as bagless vacuum cleaners. Traditionally a vacuum cleaner collected the dirt in a bag inside the machine. This allowed the dust to be disposed of but also required the (often expensive) purchase of replacement bags.

A bagless design will collect the dust and hair in a dust box which is emptied into the bin – therefore no expensive replacement bags to buy. Many of the newer models are now bagless but pay attention to this before you buy in case this is an important factor for you.

Cordless vs Corded Vacuum Cleaners

Like the last point, many of the different types of vacuum cleaner design come in cordless and corded varieties. You will need to think about which will suit your situation the best.

A corded vacuum cleaner will be powered from your mains electricity supply. This means there are no issues with running out of charge which can be a problem with those that are battery-powered. However, you need to consider the length of the cord that comes with the device. Make sure the model you buy has enough cord length to suit your living space.

A cordless upright vacuum cleaner will need to be kept on charge when not in use. It will only give you a certain amount of cleaning time before it needs recharging. However, it does have the advantage of not being restricted by a length of cord so will allow you to quickly move around the house. Upstairs and downstairs. You might be interested in my article on the best cordless vacuums.

Now let’s look at the different design types of vacuum cleaner.

vacuum cleaner on floor

Upright Vacuum Cleaner

An upright vacuum cleaner is probably the type of vacuum cleaner that you are most familiar with. It has a vertical dust box and a long handle fixed to the brush head. This will allow you to move this powerful device around the room with ease. However, it also allows you to keep a good posture so you don’t end up with a bad back. Let’s face it, none of us are getting any younger, so anything which can help to avoid unnecessary aches and pains is a good thing, right?

Upright vacuum cleaners also have powerful brushes to clean up pet hair and offer very good performance on carpeted areas. Because of this, they are often highly regarded by those looking for the best vacuum for pet hair.

They will have a larger brush head which will reduce vacuuming time and have a larger capacity to store dust. This means they will need emptying less.

The downsides are they will usually be heavier, more difficult to maneuver and less suitable for hard floors.

Canister Vacuum Cleaner

A canister vacuum cleaner is usually more compact than an upright and will have the dust box positioned in a more horizontal position. It will have wheels to help move the machine around the room.

canister vacuum cleaner

This type of vacuum is more suitable for a smaller house, and they are smaller and lighter which often makes them easier to use. The suction head is usually attached to a long flexible tube. This has the advantage of making it quick and easy to clean a wide area – plus all those hard to reach places up high and down low. This also makes it suitable for many floor types such as hard floors, rugs and carpets. In fact, the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog Canister Vacuum Cleaner was voted the best vacuum for hardwood floors and pet hair.

As they are smaller in size, this can also make them easier to store.

The cons of this type of cleaner are that they aren’t as suitable for cleaning large carpeted areas, and they store less dust than an upright.

Stick Vacuum Cleaner

A stick vacuum cleaner is quite like an upright cleaner, but also has some of the benefits of a handheld. It comes with a long handle like an upright cleaner, but is usually much thinner, and is therefore much lighter and easier to move around. Perfect for a quick clean up.

It might not have quite the same power as a full-sized upright, or store as much dust, but has many of the benefits of a handheld vacuum. Like being easy to maneuver and lightweight to use.

Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

A handheld vacuum cleaner has many advantages over a bulkier model. They are more portable and maneuverable than a traditional upright vacuum. This allows us to reach the most difficult to access nooks and crannies.

They are great for a quick clean as you can grab and go without having to worry about plugging in and setting up a bigger machine. And you can use it inside and outside the house. How about a quick clean of the car?

HoLife Handheld Cordless Vacuum

One potential downside is that you will want to think about the weight of one of these devices. You will have to lift the device all the time you are using it – so the heavier it is then you may struggle to clean for longer periods. Yet, they are usually designed with this in mind and so will often be pretty lightweight and therefore easier to use than an upright cleaner.

With a handheld vacuum cleaner, we can also get corded and cordless models, so the same pros and cons exist as I have talked about previously. The majority are cordless nowadays. But a corded handheld might give you the best of both worlds between an upright and handheld vacuum cleaner.

Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

A new and exciting development in the world of vacuuming is the robotic vacuum cleaner. How exciting is this?

A robotic cleaner is docked in a charging station while not in use. It can then be set in motion using a remote control, an app on your phone or even voice control. Give it the word and off it goes around your room! How much do I love that!

A robotic cleaner move will around your home automatically. It will adjust its cleaning depending on the type of floor it is on – hardwood, laminate, rugs or carpet. You name it, it will clean it.

When they are running low on power, robotic cleaners can go back and recharge themselves automatically. They can often fit under beds and sofas to clean even the parts of the room you can’t see.

Stop it, this is too much fun!

There are some robotic vacuum cleaners which are designed for the cleaning of pet hair. So, keep an eye out for these if you are looking for the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair and are interested in a robotic model.

Top 5 Best Vacuums For Pet Hair

The main thing that stands out when looking for the best vacuum cleaner for pets, is the wide range of different types – and prices – that appear in the list. This highlights the fact that there are many different designs and types, and that what is right for one household isn’t right for another.

Before you make your decision, you need to consider if you want a cleaner mainly for pet hair – or a better all-rounder. Do you need the portability of a handheld or stick vacuum – or the power of an upright?

Once you are clear in your mind on these issues, then narrowing down your choice will be much easier.

1. Dyson V8 Animal Cord-Free Vacuum

Dyson V8 Animal Cord Free Vacuum

The Dyson V8 Animal is such a great all-rounder, and excels in many of the categories we listed above. It might look like a traditional stick vacuum cleaner, but it easily transforms into a handheld cleaner to use on the sofa or in the car. It is also cord free so allows ultimate portability.

Not only that but as the name suggests, Dyson has designed this with our pets in mind. It boasts whole-machine HEPA filtration to collect dust and allergens.

This model has a powerful 21-volt battery which gives 40 minutes of powerful suction time. It also means it drives stiff nylon bristles in the brush bar that can deep clean carpets of all your pet hair.

The Dyson V8 Animal also has a hygienic dirt ejector which allows you to remove the dust without having to touch it at all. It certainly doesn’t come cheap, but it rates very highly with the people who have bought it and used it in their homes.

2. Shark Rocket TruePet Corded Ultra-Light Upright HV322

Shark Rocket TruePet Corded Ultra-Light Upright HV322

The Shark Rocket TruePet Upright is also one of the more expensive machines in the top five. But it is certainly proof of the saying that you get what you pay for. It came top of the list in our guide to the best Shark vacuums for pet hair.

The modern ultra-light upright design will look great in any home, and weighing in at under 9 pounds it will be easy to use in any situation. Not only that, but it can convert into a handheld vacuum to allow for maximum flexibility.

This model comes with Sharks TruePet motorized brush. This allows us powerful handheld deep cleaning of a range of surfaces like rugs and carpets. It is also outstanding when required to clean hardwood floors too. It has a specially-designed Dust-Away™ hard floor attachment which can cope with everything from large debris to fine dust.

A great feature is the addition of powerful LED lights on the front of the machine so that we can easily see hidden debris.

3. Eufy RoboVac 11 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Eufy RoboVac 11 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Our first robotic vacuum cleaner comes in the shape of the Eufy Robovac 11. There’s no need to worry about weight and portability as this little beauty will do all the hard work for you.

It comes with a high-capacity LI-ion battery which will give enough power for 1.5 hours of cleaning time. Plus, this self-charging design means you don’t even have to remember to charge it up.

If you are wondering if this is any good for pet hair, then don’t worry. This cleaner uses triple filters including one layer of HEPA-style filters. This ensures it collects even the smallest microscopic allergens.

The Robovac has 11 infrared sensors and a pressure-sensitive bumper which allows it to easily navigate around your home. It has a 3-point cleaning system with side brushes, a rolling brush and powerful suction to make sure it cleans a wide range of floor types.

One downside to consider is that is not suitable for very dark colored floors or high-pile carpet. So, if your home has these then you may need to think about something else.

4. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Hand Vac 33A1

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld Vacuum, Corded, 33A1

This Bissell Eraser Handheld Vacuum is one of the best-selling models on and comes with thousands of positive reviews.

It is slightly unusual in that it is a corded handheld model, but this means it offers a powerful clean of stairs, upholstery and more. It is a lightweight device weighing only 4 pounds and so will be easy to use in many different situations.

For our purposes, it is an ideal solution, as it is specially designed for picking up pet hair around the house. It has a specialized rubber nozzle that attracts pet hair and dirt on softer surfaces. There is also a hard nozzle for cleaning former areas such as the inside of a car. The two different nozzles are easily switched by using the special release button to remove the existing one. You can then quickly snap on the replacement.

The multi-level filtration system ensures a thorough clean of your home. It also uses the Bissell Cyclonic Cleaning System found on other models in their range.

5. Bissell PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Corded Vacuum 81L2A

Bissell PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Corded Vacuum 81L2A

Bissell has another entry in the top 5 with this stick vacuum. The base of this cleaner has a distinctive V-shape and this allows it to collect fine dust and larger debris without using a brush roll. The wipers on the V-shaped base are made from a hair-attracting rubber material. This allows it to collect more pet hair than would be possible by just using suction.

This innovative design is also meant to reduce the need for different attachments or a broom mechanism. This ensures it can clean on a variety of surfaces with minimal effort. The head will also swivel for extra flexibility when cleaning in confined areas.

At 7.5 lbs, it is a relatively lightweight cleaner to use, and has an easy-to-empty dirt cup allowing for quick and hygienic disposal of the dirt.

Pet Hair Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide

I hope you have found this article useful in deciding which is the best pet hair vacuum cleaner for you. I have tried to highlight many of the important things to consider when looking to buy a cleaner, but let us review the important points.

  • Filters: picking a vacuum with the right filters for the job is very important – especially when we’re dealing with pet hair. The best type of filter for pet hair and allergens is a HEPA filter which forces the air through a fine mesh to catch microscopic allergens.
  • Style: an upright vacuum can be more powerful. Better on carpets and large areas. A canister, stick or handheld vacuum will be lighter and easier to maneuver, and better on a wider range of surfaces.
  • Attachments: some cleaners come with more attachments than others. You might find these useful for better cleaning of certain places. Some common attachments are a crevice tool, an extension tool, a motorized brush head tool and an upholstery tool.
  • Weight: even an upright vacuum needs you to push it around, so consider how you will cope with a heavy cleaner. A lightweight handheld or stick vacuum might be a better choice.
  • Power: a vacuum cleaner designed for collecting pet hair will usually have a bit more power than a standard cleaner. A corded cleaner with a motor will be rated in amps or watts. Aim for a minimum of 4 amps – or 700 watts. A cordless model will have a battery rated in volts. Aim for a minimum of 14 volts. In general, a battery with a higher voltage will have more powerful suction and last longer.
  • Cord or Cordless: a cordless cleaner makes it easy to clean all around the house. Inside and out. Yet, a cord cleaner doesn’t need charging and will keep cleaning for as long as you want.
  • Storage space: don’t forget that you need somewhere to store your cleaner when it’s not being used. If you are limited for space, maybe a smaller cleaner like a canister or stick vacuum will be best for you.
  • Types of surface: some cleaners will work better on some surfaces than others. An upright is great for carpet, but a canister might be a better all-rounder for harder surfaces.

So, there we have it. I hope I have been able to help you decide which pet hair vacuum cleaner is the right one for you. As you can see, there are many makes and models to choose from, and several factors to consider.

As a dog owner, I’m looking for the best vacuum for dog hair. But whatever type of hairy pet you have then it’s an important decision to make and any of these will do a great job.

Not everybody will agree on the most suitable vacuum cleaner for them. We will all have slightly different needs. But hopefully, you will find this guide useful in choosing the best pet hair vacuum.
